What Are Peptides?
A plain-language primer on what peptides are, how they differ from proteins, and why they are studied.
The short definition
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins — linked together by peptide bonds. Where proteins are large and elaborately folded, peptides are small: typically a few to a few dozen amino acids long.
Because they are small and specific, peptides are a large area of scientific study. Researchers investigate how particular sequences interact with receptors, enzymes, and signaling pathways in laboratory and preclinical settings.
Peptide, protein, or amino acid?
Amino acids are the individual letters. A peptide is a short word made of those letters. A protein is a long, folded paragraph. The boundary between a long peptide and a small protein is a matter of convention, not a hard rule, and different fields draw the line differently.
Some peptides occur naturally in the body; others are synthesized in a lab to study a specific sequence. The word 'peptide' on its own tells you about structure — not about safety, legality, or any effect in humans.
Why they are studied
Peptides are of interest because their small size and specificity can make them useful research tools for probing biological questions. In a laboratory, a defined sequence lets a scientist ask a precise question and measure a precise response.
