Questions to Ask a Licensed Provider

Neutral, patient-empowering questions to bring to a licensed clinician — so a conversation is informed, not scripted.

Before you start

These are conversation starters to help you engage a licensed provider, not a checklist that implies any particular course of action is right for you. Your provider knows your history; let their judgment lead.

Understanding the recommendation

What is the goal of what you are recommending, and what does the current evidence actually support?

What are the known risks, side effects, and unknowns, and how will we monitor for them?

Are there alternatives — including doing nothing — and how do they compare?

Understanding the source and oversight

If a compounded medication is involved, which licensed pharmacy prepares it, and what quality and sterility standards do they follow?

How will we follow up, and what should prompt me to call you sooner?

What credentials and licensure do you hold, and how do you stay current on this area?

A closing note

A good provider welcomes questions and answers them plainly. If a source discourages questions, promises guarantees, or skips the licensed-clinician step, treat that as information about the source.
