What a COA Cannot Tell You
The limits of a certificate — the things testing does not cover, and why a clean COA is necessary but not sufficient.
A snapshot, not a guarantee
A COA describes a sample of a batch at the moment it was tested. It does not by itself prove that every vial from that batch is identical, that the material was stored well afterward, or that what you received is the batch the certificate names.
Traceability closes part of that gap — matching lot numbers and dates — but a certificate is evidence about the past, not a warranty about your specific vial today.
What standard testing does not cover
Identity and purity testing typically will not, on its own, tell you about sterility, endotoxin levels, residual solvents, or contaminants outside the tested panel. If a property matters for a given study, it has to be tested for explicitly — absence of a test is not a passing result.
A high purity percentage also says nothing about whether a compound is appropriate, safe, or legal for any use in a person. That is a different question entirely, and not one a chromatogram can answer.
Reading around the edges
Be skeptical of certificates that are unsigned, undated, lab-anonymous, or missing the chromatogram behind a purity figure. Those are the fields that make a document checkable.
A clean, traceable COA is a good sign and a reasonable minimum for research material. It is necessary, not sufficient — one input among several, alongside sound handling and, for anything involving a person, a licensed provider.
